Call Sheets: an essential preventive safety tool

Dear Members,
One of the best ways to reduce and prevent risks is to stay informed. Health and safety is everyone’s responsibility, and there is a really easy way to contribute to a safe set by simply reviewing the call sheets and safety memos that are sent in advance of the workday.
Some of the essential and important information that you can find on the call sheet
- Weapon(s) on set,
- Closed set
- Stunts
- Use of flames, flammable products or explosives
- Shooting on roads or public areas
- In or near water
- With animal(s) (wrangler)
- Exposed to smoke, vapours/smog/fog…
- Any and all other risks.
Other health and safety information you can find on the Call Sheet
Other information that you can also find on the Call Sheet that is related to health and safety:
- Closest Hospital to the location
- Expected Weather (dress appropriately!)
- Name of the Medic on set
- Name and contact of the person to advise in the event of harassment
- Safety Hotline number or relevant links
In order to further inform, Production will also share the CNESST guidelines when applicable and/or the directives adopted by the National Health & Safety Committee. The information in regards to these risks must provide sufficient details to ensure that the everyone on set knows where, when and what particular risks will be on set and who is responsible for what related to those risks. For example, when fire will be present for a scene, appropriate messaging can be “For scene #, flammable materials will be used. Refer to fiches techniques 4, 5 and 11 of the CNESST preventative guidelines which must be respected. If you have questions, please refer to [person responsible, for example the special effects technician during this scene].’’
If you are on set and you find the Call Sheet is lacking in pertinent details, please let ACTRA Montreal know.
For more information, ACTRA Montreal recommends that you consult the CNESST website: https://www.cnesst.gouv.qc.ca/fr/prevention-securite/identifier-corriger-risques/liste-informations-prevention/travail-dans-lindustrie-cinema-video as well as the Collective Agreements.
