What is Vocal Combat Technique?

Vocal Combat Technique™ is based on vocal health and industry best practices and its goal is to help train professional performers go to and repeat believable violent vocal extremes in the healthiest manner possible. The workshops introduce the scaffolded skill work, that with drill repetition over time, create a solid technique foundation for correct and safe screaming; yelling, groans, choking, battle cries for film/tv and video games. Often trained and untrained actors alike, suffer extreme vocal fatigue and trauma and risk of real vocal injury is common.

Learning objectives

  • To clarify the steps of and begin a professional practice of efficient, accurate vocal hygiene and health.
  • To learn and begin the practice of SOVT/Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract exercises as an intense and detailed vocal workout for breath capacity and strength and voice resonance and strength.
  • To learn the correct choices of ‘resets’ to release potential unconscious tension before and after vocal extreme sounds.to learn the correct vocal structure and breath pressure for efforts and impacts.
  • To learn the correct structure and breath pressure for calls/battle cries.
  • To learn the correct structure and breath pressure for growls.
  • To learn the correct structure and breath pressure for screams.

Application process (Open to ACTRA members only)

  • Submission of a professional resume.
  • Submission of a headshot
  • Submission of a short 50-60 words description:
    • Voice experience in video games, stunt fight in films/tv or other professional work.
    • Training in mocap and voice studio techniques.
    • Description of vocal challenges/trauma from performance contract (if applicable).

  • Module 2: 20 July 2024 – 11:00 to 14:00 (In person at ACTRA Montreal’s office)
  • Module 3: 21 July 2024 – 11:00 to 15:00 (In person at ACTRA Montreal’s office)
