Our Monthly Health & Safety Memo brought to you by the SST Committee:

Even Base Camp has potential risks

SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING !

Don’t wait for someone else to signal the problem.

Here are some of the most common risks:

  • Being hit by a vehicle;
  • Tripping/falling over cables/wires;
  • Falling on the unstable trailer steps.
  • Slipping/falling on slippery surfaces

There are some preventive measures that can help reduce these risks:

  • Looking attentively when walking and avoiding looking down at your phone, the script, the call sheet, the shooting schedule.
  • Reading, listening to and following safety directives.
  • Holding onto railings when using stairs/steps.
  • Wearing appropriate footwear for the environment (this might mean bringing an extra pair of shoes!)
  • Avoiding headphones that can block out all noises (honking car, the beeping of a truck in reverse)
  • Scoping out the base to identify & signal any potential risk to Production:
    • Cable/wire that isn’t kept out of the way (production can tape it down or have a platform over it)
    • Loose steps that aren’t secured (Production can secure the steps and put non-skid tape and neon paint)
    • Slippery/wet/icy surfaces (production can put a sign up, wipe off wet floors, shovel & add salt/gravel to icy areas)
    • Limited visibility due to unlit areas when working at dusk or night (production can put reflective tapes, provide you with a headlamp or flashlight)
    • If a costume, prosthetics, wigs, accessories.. is limiting your visibility, hearing or mobility (Production can find ways to alter the costume or have someone assist you)
    • Anything obstructing or blocking the way (Production can remove, redefine a new passage)

On-Set Health and Safety is everyone’s responsibility:  ”See something, Say something!
